Why Nicole is Running for Congress

Jobs & Economy

Nicole’s mom was a single mom working for the Federal Government. Growing up, she always heard that if you get a good Federal job, then you will be set for life. Seeing the actions taking place in Washington and witnessing family friends being laid off or furloughed from the Federal Government, Nicole knew she had to step up and run for Congress. The 5th Congressional District is home to 5 counties (Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s, Anne Arundel, and Prince George’s County) with a large number of federal workers and contractors who do their jobs regardless of party or politics. They should not become political pawns of the federal government. Individuals within our community who are no longer able to financially contribute to the local economy are devastating for our small businesses and community.

Environment & Energy

The science is clear; human-produced gases are changing the planet’s climate, and the impacts will be disastrous. Nicole knows that families and communities are already being impacted by climate change, namely, flooding in certain areas and record rains. In Congress, she will support policies to prevent flooding and keep our waterways clean. As a lifelong neighbor of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, Nicole prioritizes the health of our waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. To her, protecting the environment is essential to the future of the planet, our economy, and everyone’s health.

Housing

Affordable housing in Maryland is becoming harder to find, and many families are being priced out of our communities and forced onto the streets. In her career as a real estate attorney and as a State Delegate, Nicole has championed efforts to create more affordable housing and a more diverse housing stock. She has fought against deregulation for predatory lenders, unreasonable local limitations, and unfair evictions. In Congress, Nicole will use her years of experience to advance legislation that makes housing more accessible and affordable in our community.

Women’s Rights

Nicole is a firm believer in a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, Nicole worked to place the right to choose into the Maryland State Constitution. Additionally, she led the effort to pass legislation shielding healthcare providers in Maryland from outrageous laws in other states that would unfairly criminalize the practice of medicine. In Congress, she will consistently fight to protect a woman’s right to healthcare, including repealing the harmful Hyde Amendment.
